Two agrammatic patients suffering from crossed aphasia were contrasted in the following aspects: (1) characteristics of spontaneous speech, (2) performance of informal tasks relating to particles and verbs, and (3) scores on the formal test of syntactic comprehension.<BR>Case 1 in spontaneous speech omitted lexical verbs, particles, auxiliaries and inflections of verbs, but showed neither a word-order problem nor substitutions of particles. He scored good performance on all informal tasks and retained competence in syntactic comprehension. Case 2 in spontaneous speech, omitted lexical verbs, substituted particles and had a word-order problem. However, unlike Case 1 she was able to present long phrases of predication. She made errors on all informal tasks, and especially had wordfinding diffi-culty for verbs. Syntactic comprehension was poor. These findings suggest that there are differences between case 1 and case 2, and thus that agrammatism in crossed aphasia is heterogeneous.
