Lithium oxide-lime-silica glasses, in which increasing quantities of CaO being replaced by Fe2O3.Glasses conforming to the oxide composition, 72% SiO2, (12-x)% CaO, 16% Li2O, in which the quantity of x lies between the limits ranging from 0% to 12% of Fe2O3, has been melted and their general characteristics, the FeO-contents, the actual oxide compositions by chemical analysis, and also the characteristic transmission curves have been determined. The corroding action of the lithium oxide glass upon the fire clay pot, being far more remarkable than that of the corresponding soda- or potash-glasses; have prevented us from the experiments of factory scale melting, which has hitherto been dealt with in the previous papers. The author has now carried out this series of melting operation with the Glober electric furnace in as short as possible duration of time, about two hours, for instance, the amount of each melt being just 250g of glass. The results of the chemical analysis are set out in the following table. The preceding table shows that the amount of alumina in this series of glasses is far more than that contained in the series of the other alkali oxide glasses, and also that the percentage ratio EeO/FeO+Fe2O3 of these glasses presents somewhat a different tendency from that of the corresponding series of soda or potash glasses, which is considered to be due to the small amounts of melts and the agitation at one time in the course of melting to avoid the inhomogeneity of the glasses obtainable. Also determining the transmission curves of the test samples, about 0.8mm. in thickness, there has been observed no remarkable characteristic differing from that of the soda-or potashglasses. The glasses of this series presented, in general, the greenish color with the increasing amount of iron oxide and the dark brownish color at the range of considerable amount of it.
