Female rats were ureterally catheterized and received a single intravenous injection of creatinine.Parathyroidectomy caused a rapid and marked decrease in urinary phosphorus excretion without a decrease in creatinine clearance. It was concluded that the net reabsorption of phosphorus in the renal tubles increased markedly 1 to 4.5 hrs.after parathyroidectomy. The change in urinary phosphorus excretion preceded those in serum calcium or phosphorus concentration and seemed to be a primary effct of parathyroidectomy.Considering quantitatively, the amount of the decrease in urinary phosphorus in the parathyroidectomized rats was in excess of the quantity of the increase in extra-cellular phosphorus. Moreover, a significant increase was observed in inorganic phosphorus content of liver 16 hrs.after parathyroidectomy in rats.It seems possible that the parathyroids have an influence not only on the phosphorus transport in renal tubules but also on the general metabolism of phosphorus in the body cells.
