The flame photometric method of potash determination in compound and mixed fertilizers has been investigated by use of Lange s flame photometer, and compared with the official in regard to the precision, accuracy and reliability. The experiments were conducted by laboratries in this country on the same samples. The result indicated that the direct determination of water soluble and total potash can be made by using the solution diluted to 10 volumes by the Official Method without preliminary treatment. But it gave negative error when the amount of HCl was exceeded above 0.2 cc per 100 cc; however, the error produced by the presence of HCl was decreased to a certain extent by neutralizing with NH<SUB>4</SUB>OH. In case there is a trouble of formation of precipitate of CaCO<SUB>3</SUB> in a solution of basic mixed fertilizer, it is prevented by adding citric acid which has no effect by addition to a considerable extent. The error σ was 0. 20 % in the perchlorate method, 0. 21 % in the chloroplatinate method and 0. 06 % in the flame photometric method, (when σ<SUP>2</SUP> = σ<SUP>2</SUP><SUB>L</SUB> +σ<SUP>2</SUP><SUB>A</SUB>+ σ<SUP>2</SUP><SUB>D</SUB> +σ<SUP>2</SUP><SUB>S</SUB> + σ<SUP>2</SUP><SUB>R</SUB> / <SUB>2</SUB>, where L=laboratory, A=analyst, D=date of analysis, S=preparation of sample solution, and R = analysis from the same sample solution). The greatest error was σ<SUB>L</SUB> : 0. 19, 0. 20, 0. 05 %, and the X was 6. 20, 6. 16, 6. 17 %, prespectively, on the same sample.
