Among trace of impurities contained in highly purified germanium dioxide which is used as a semiconducting material, quantitative determination of Cu which gives unfavorable effect on its semiconducting property has been carr ied out by colorimetric method using dithizone and neocuproine. Although the former has high sensitivity for Cu, it gives lower reliable value for dealing with the trace amount on account of the deffects of having lower stability of the reagent, disturbances by the other ions and too complicated procedures of extraction and separation, while the latter is a special reagent for Cu, it has larger allowable pH ranges and gives the result of high accuracy; therefore, neocuproine is used in the experiment. The determination of Cu in pure water to be used for hydrolysis of GeCl4 indicated that repeating of three distillations gave the result of showing 2.08 γ/1. Tests on a few samples of GeO2 of Eagle Picher in U. S. A. and of different steps of refining process indicated that all of the samples in the final step of refining contained about 0.2 p. p. m. of Cu.
