A spectrophotometric method for the determination of 1, 1'-dianthrimide using boric acid as a colorimetric reagent was studied, whereby a rapid and reliable method was established.
When a concentrated sulfuric acid solution of 1, 1'-dianthrimide was treated with a large excess of boric acid at 120°C for a few minutes, a colored solution of boron complex was readily obtained. The maximum absorption of the complex shifted to shorter wavelength with increasing water content in the solution. A solution containing 10 vol% water showed the strongest absorbancy and the maximum absorption of this solution was at 630 μm. The calibration curve followed Beer's law and the possible impurities contained in 1, 1'-dianthrimide, such as 1-chloro- and 1 aminoanthraquinone, did not interfere. Therefore, the determination of 1, 1'-dianthrimide was performed by using the absorbancy at 630 μm.
Further, by means of the continuous variation method, the composition of 1, 1'-dianthrimideboron complex was studied, and it was found that the complex was composed of one molecule of 1, 1'-dianthrimide and one atom of boron.
