Copper gave two polarographic waves in acrylonitrile the heights of which were almost equal. 0.1M sodium perchlorate was used as a supporting electrolyte. The half-wave potential of the second wave was -0.36 V (vs. S.C.E.) and its slope was 0.062. It was due to the reduction of acrylonitrile-copper (I) complex and the wave height was proportional to the copper concentration of 10-4 mole/l. It was found that copper was extracted from its aqueous solution into acrylonitrile layer by the reduction effect of hydroxylamine, while it was not extracted in the presence of EDTA between pH 2 to 13 whereby sodium citrate was used as the buffer agent.
Copper extracted into an acrylonitrile layer was back-extracted quantitatively into an aqueous layer by EDTA and hydrogen peroxide mixed solution.
The extraction was applied successfully for the determination of copper in acrylic polymers dyed by cuprous ion method. The result was in good agreement with that by the ashing method.
