Various environmental effects such as hydrogen bonding between solute and solvent molecules or association between solute molecules on the fluoresce nce and absorption spectra of some π electron systems are studied. Shift of hydrogen bonding equilibrium in excited state has been observed by measuring the fluorescence for the system of naphthylamines and various proton acceptors. Hydrogen bonding effect on the fluorescence yield of some nitrogen heterocycles is studied, and the mechanism of inner quenching in these molecules and fluorescence quenching due to hydrogen bond formation is discussed. Further the effect of solvent on the association of some acridine derivatives is studied in relation to the mechanism of metachromasy phenomena, and the mechanism of association is discussed.
