The technique of thin-layer chromatography has been applied to the separation of poly (vinylalcohol) (PVA) from biological materials. A mixture of boric acid and iodine solution was used as the detection reagent. A solvent mixture of propanol-water was, effective in separating on silica gel, and 30% perchloric acid in separating on kieselgur in the presence of starch. The Rf value was unaltered by changes in degree of polymerization (5002, 000). The Rf value of fully hydrolysed PVA was higher than that of partially hydrolysed PVA with 30% perchloric acid on kieselgur.
