A method of determining 0.010.5% of tin in secondary aluminum alloys for die casting was investigated, and the following procedure was established.
One gram of sample is taken up with hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide, and tin is extracted into MIBK from 6N HCl medium. It is then backextracted into water, and is concentrated with a little hydrochloric acid. After the co-existing ferric ion is reduced by the addition of ascorbic acid, tin is determined by d. c. polarography in the presence of 3.5N HCl-5×10-4 M tetraphenylarsonium chloride and 10v/v% ethanol as the supporting electrolyte. The half-wave potential is-0.45 V vs. Hg pool.
It takes 80 minutes for a determination, and the precision of this method is approximately 2% as the coefficient of variation for aluminum alloys containing 0.2% tin.
