• A method for estimating the retention indices of organic compounds was investigated. Functional retention index components (I) of the sample <I>vs</I>. various kinds of liquid phases were first calculated, based on the additivity of retention index, and then the relative polarity of a liquid phase regarding a functional group of the sample and the change of (I) with respect to the unit polarity of a liquid phase were listed. Thus, an equation derived to express the retention indices of substituted linear alkyl compounds, and a further application was extended to isomers thereof by the relation between boiling point index ratios and retention index ratios. A fairly good agreement between calculated values and the observed was attained by this method. Relative polarity of a liquid phase was examined by the characteristic difference between functional groups in the liquid phase and in the sample, and authors revealed variation of the polarity of a liquid phase with the difference of the functional groups in the sample.
