In the previous reports {This journal, 17, 148, 440(1968)}, the pyrolysis-gas chromatography was proved to be a prominsing method for the identification of C6C10 alkylbenzenes and aliphatic alcohols.<BR>In this report, the application of this technique to C10C19 alkylbenzenes eluted from gas chromatograph is described.<BR>Using a fractioner, small portion of individual alkylbenzene eluted from the 1 st gas chromatograph was put directly into the pyrolysis tube (stainless steel, 4.8mm, i.d.×83mm, filled with 0.77m<I>l</I>alumina).The pyrolysates were led into the 2nd gas chromatograph immediately, and were mutually separated (Fig.1).<BR>The pyrogram of C10C19 alkylbenzenes were obtained under the conditions involving flow rate of carrier gas (hydrogen)-1 st gas chromatograph; 60m<I>l</I>/min, 2nd gas chromatograph; 20 m<I>l</I>/min, and pyrolysis temperature-550°C(Table I).<BR>The position of the benzene ring attached to the alkyl group can be determined by comparing the areas of the eight characteristic peaks whose retention index values are 658, 772, 867, 960, 1068, 1247, 1369 and 1391. And the carbon number of the sample can be determined through dividing the retention index value of the unpyrolysed peak by 100.
