In liquid chromatography, the thermal detector, that is, a thermistor inserted in the detector column is used and the heat of absorption of packing agent, is determined with this. <BR>In this paper, trace amounts of volatile fatty acids in water were determined by liquid chromatography with thermal detector and the fundamental conditions for the concentration of the material was investigated.<BR>In the procedure, the sample solution was supplied through a sample tube filled on the top of the separation column by a micro-injector. The sample tube used for the injection of the sample solution was made by teflon pipe and the amount of the sample to be injected could varied by changing the length of the teflon pipe.<BR>In this paper, the effect of the amount of sample on the retention time, efficient of column and separation was determined and the results were discussed.<BR>When 24 m<I>l</I> of 8 μg/m<I>l</I> volatile fatty acids (formic, acetic and propionic acids) was injected, the peak height on the thermogram was 23cm.<BR>The recomended conditions were as follows; Separation column: 0.8φ×100 cm, detection column : 0.8φ×10 cm, flow rate: 0.68 m<I>l</I>/min, chart speed; 30 mm/H, sensitivity: 3/1000°C f.s., temperature of separation: 55°C, temperature of detector: 25°C, elution agent : 0.1 <I>N</I> HC1, packing agent : AG 1×8 (200400 mesh), amount of sample: 1 m<I>l</I>24 m<I>l</I>.
