We have studied the quantitative determination of Mg, Fe and Ca in talc by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Samples were treated with sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid and then dissolved in deionized water. With this treatment, Mg, Fe and Ca were determined by means of respective calibration curves, without interferences of the coexisting elements. All the samples were burnt in air-acetylene flame, and a light with wavelength of 2852Å was employed for determination of Mg, 2483Å line for Fe, and 4227Å line for Ca. Linear calibration curves were obtained in a range of 0.54 ppm. The standard deviations were less than 1.5%, and the results were satisfactorily coincident with those of other methods. We also found that the technique is especially recommended for determination of Ca of trace quantity in Mg.
