Mercury atoms in a cell filled with air was detected by forward scattering of the 253.7 nm mercury resonance radiation. Transverse magnetic field up to 13 kOe was applied to the Hgvapor. Magnetically induced birefringence (Voigt effect) was utilized for the separation of the forward scattered radiation from the exciting light. Scattering signal could be detected from 25 pg mercury vapor existing in the scattering region. The results indicate that this method is applicable to the sensitive and selective analysis of elements.
