Infrared absorption spectra of thin films (about 0.1 μ thick) of maleic, malonic and L-tartaric acids and coumarin formed on metal plates were investigated by use of the polarized incident beam method.<BR>All absorption bands of maleic acid except those due to out of plane vibrations disappeared in the thin film spectrum.This fact implies that maleic acid molecules have a planar structure and are parallel to the metal surface.Difference found between the spectra of films formed on Incoloy and on nickel shows that the crystal structure of thin film can change in changing the substrate metal.<BR>The splitting of absorption bands observed in the spectra of malonic acid and coumarin films suggests that the crystal structures of these compounds in thin films may be different from those of bulk.The spectra of thin films formed on nickel plates from the aqueous solutions of dicarboxylic acids have not absorption bands due to original acids but those due to their carboxylate ions. The spectra of L-tartaric acid in amorphous thin films exhibits very broad OH bands, suggesting the existence of random intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
