Spectrochemical analysis of carbon in steel with 1930.9 Å line is made with air spectrometer (Quantolet) instead of vacuum spectrometer.Quantolet is a direct reading spectrometer with a grating of 2400 grooves per mm and 75 cm radius of curvature.In order to avoid the influence of CO<SUB>2</SUB> in air, an argon spark stand is used. As the absorption of O<SUB>2</SUB> at C 1930.9 Å is much stronger than at two Fe III lines on both sides of carbon line, Fe III spectra that pass through the carbon exit slit are stronger than in the case of vacuum optical path. Therefore the signal to background ratio in air path is very low. But a proper adjustment of vertical position of spark gap and narrowing of the exit slit give nearly the same result as obtained with vacuum spectrometer.Working curves of the NBS standard samples and reproducibility of data assure the usability of air spectrometer for carbon analysis.
