Recent studies on bioactive metabolites of symbiotic or epiphytic microalgae were reviwed. Maitotoxin, a putative Ca channel activator isolated from Gambierdiscus toxicus, was suggested to have a unique chemical feature. Many okadaic acid analogs were isolated from <I>Prorocentrum lima</I> and from shellfishes infested with <I>Dinophysis fortii. P. lima</I> also produced a new macrolide imine, and <I>D</I>. <I>fortii</I> another macrolide named pectenotoxin. <I>Amphidinium</I> sp. isolated from a flat worm produced potent antineoplastic macrolides, and a related species, <I>A</I>. <I>carteri</I>, hemolysins. A benthic microalga <I>Goniodoma pseudogonyaulax</I> produced an antifungal macrolide. Yessotoxin isolated from dinoflagellate-infested shellfishes had a fused-ring skeleton resembling that of brevetoxin B. The importance of symbiotic microalgae for the understanding of marine ecosystem was also stressed.
