Glutaric acid was obtained in a good yield from cyclopentane through oxidation with NO<SUB>2</SUB>. At 65°C, 65% of the NO<SUB>2</SUB> used was found to be consumed in 3 hrs., and the yield of the dibasic acid reached 91% on a basis of consumed NO<SUB>2</SUB>. As the reaction temperature was raised, the consumption of NO<SUB>2</SUB> was accelerated, though the yield of glutaric acid dropped. The effects of the ratio NO<SUB>2</SUB>/cyclopentane upon conversion and yield were less evident than that of temperature. The main by-product from this reaction was mononitrocyclopentane. The reaction rate of NO<SUB>2</SUB> was expressed by the equation :log k=1.08×10<SUP>12</SUP>e 21170/RTwhere, k represented reaction rate constant [mol 1<SUP>-1</SUP> hr<SUP>-1</SUP>];T represented absolute reaction temperature [°K].
