Recent applications of molybdenum and tungsten-based heteropolyacids (HPA) in the catalyses in organic syntheses are briefly reviewed.<BR>The acid-base and redox functions, together with additional properties such as stability at relatively high temperatures, high solubility in protic solvents and low corrosivity as well as low toxicity have favored the realization of the HPA catalysts effective in a variety of commercial organic reactions.<BR>It is stressed that the catalyses are intimately related to the physico-chemical properties of the HPA molecule, for which valuable information is now available due to the development of analytical tools.
