Laboratory synthesis of surface-active agent, EGDE, (Ethylene glycol mono docosyl ether) an evaporation depres sant, was described in the first report. This report deals with a simple and economic synthetic method of EGDE starting from rapeseed oil. The EGDE showed surface tension of 40dyne/cm at room temperature without addition of any external mechanical operation. It showed 70-80% suppression of evaporation under usual condition and the maximum suppression was above 90%. This is much higher than heretofore known evaporation suppressing agents, such as cetanol (with the maximum suppression 30-35%) and octadecanol. Using of EGDE was effective not only for suppression of evaporation but it was accompanied with an increase of temperature of water and it is effective for improving of thermal conditions in agriculture and horticulture.
