The action of L-thyroxin (T4) on the dimorphic character of Endomycopsis fibuligera EC4 (IFO) was studied. The most remarkable effect of T4 was observed to be the increase in the growth of yeast-like cells in 0.1M NaCl medium, but not in salt-free medium. However, similar effects were not observed when LiCl or MgCl2 replaced NaCl. The promotive effect of T4 on the growth of yeast-like cells in saline medium was not influenced by the addition of Cu2+ or SeO42- but coexistence with 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) could significantly enhance the promotive effect. Similar enhancement was observed when methionine was used instead of TTC. On the basis of these readily produced effects of T4 on the dimorphic changes of yeast, it was suggested that the action of T4 must be concerned with the regulation mechanism of sulfhydryl metabolism under saline conditions.
