The growth rings of S. ringgoldianum were investigated with special reference to age determination, using material collected mainly at Tsuyazaki, northern Kyushu, Japan. It is clear that the growth ring is formed periodically once a year, between August and September, therefore it is concluded that the ring can be called an annual ring. One year old plants do not bear reproductive organs. In individuals of two years old, about half attain maturity, and the rest remain immature. All the plants of more than three years old bear receptacles in late summer. The longevity of this species is considered to be six or seven years, since plants with five pairs of lines are seen in specimens growing in the intertidal zone and six pairs of lines are counted in specimens cast up from deeper water.
