Reduced viscosities, η8p/C, of a commercial sample of agar-agar in aqueous potassium chloride were measured at 60°C. as a function of agar concentration C (g./100ml.) and KCl concentration x (moles/l.). The family of η8p/C vs. C curves obtained for different x was essentially similar to that which had been reported for many other polyelectrolytes such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. From comparison with data for other typical polyelectrolytes some evidence was obtained which indicates the agar-agar molecule to have a very low charge density and a high chain stiffness.
