It has already been known that synthetic polysaccharide sulfuric acid esters have a blood anticoagulant activity in vitro. They, however, cannot be employed clinically on account of their toxicity. We synthesed sulfuric acid esters of glycogen, chondroitin sulfate & alginic acid. Their S contents were 16.1%, 8.2% & 12.3% and showed the following anticoagulant activities in comparison with those of heparin, such as (heparin 1) alginic acid sulfate 1/2, glycogen sulfate 1/12 & chondroitin polysulfate 1/20. The lethal doses of alginic acid sulfate land chondroitin sulfate were both 10mg per 10g in mouse body weight.
