The samples of Mactra sulcataria were caught at 6 regions, Hommoku, Urayasu, Goi, Banzu, Futtsu and Takeoka in Tokyo Bay, in the year of 1942 to '43, and we measured total weight (W), shell length (L), height (H) and breadth (B) to study morphometry and rate of growth. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Growth. Based on 2, 388 specimens, caught in 21 times in the duration of Sept. 5, 1942 to Oct. 20, 1943 at Urayasu, we found that they grow very rapidly shown as in Fig. 2. 2. Relation between W and L, H and B. As the results of measuring and statistical treatment the following equation was found to express it properly (Fig. 3 & Table 1). W=aKb, where K was calculated for L, H and B and a and b for each respective case. The ratio between L, H and B against W changes (Fig. 4), since the value of b varies in each case. As to the growth of shells (Fig. 5) in general, the individuols with rapid growth (r) and those with retarded growth (r') are seen in the following relations: Lr' < Lr', Hr> Hr'and Br < Br'. In the light of these facts (Fig. 4 & 5) it seems that Urayasu is suitable to the growth of young Mactra and Futtsu to that of adult. 3. Formation of the marked rings. In the present species the marked rings were found to develope, in addition to other less distinct rings, in certain particular time of the year. It seems that these marked rings are formed when the natural environment-may be salinity, water temperature and other multiple factors-changes in a short period. However, it was seen that all individuals dwelling the same region grow the marked rings simaltaenously (see Fig. 6 and Table 2).
