Deciduous trees, especially willow family (Salicaceae), have not been noticed worthy for rail-protecting forest against snow-drift. However, low tree-belt of pioneer tree species is indispensable for the establishment of general shelterbelt at severe-conditioned region.
On March 1967 the writers investigated Japan poplar (Populus maximowiczii) and Todo fir (Abies sachalinensis) mixed stand at Kamitonbetsu, northern Hokkaido. Populus were planted in 1940 and Abies in 1941. Stem-analysis shows that Populus reached 10 meters high during 10 years after planting and helped the early growth of Abies.
It is certain that if willows (Salix) and Populus are planted firstly, within 10 years will be gained low tree-belt and that they will cover the early blank of time of proper but slow-growing evergreen conifers.
