The authors carried out the experiments on totalizers (snow storage gages) at Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture, durinf the winter 1954-1955. Results obtained are as follows : <BR>(1) From measurements of CaCl2 concentration and minimum temperature of its solution, and further the observation of freezing in the calcium chloride solution in various dimensions of totalizers, it was shown that the larger the diameter of the storage body is, in comparison with that of an orifice, the preventive measure of freezing is the more effective.<BR>(2) When the depth of initial calcium chloride solution exceeds a certain limit (abovt 20 cm in our experiment), we cannot expect the increase of the preventive effect of freezing so much.<BR>(3) Relations between wind velovity and catching characteristics of totalizer in various types are shown in Fig. 6.<BR>(6) The following conditions are necessary for totalizers in order to catch snowfall sufficiently.<BR>a. The diameter of an orifice must be greater than 20 cm at least.<BR>b. To use a stand pipe type near an orifice.<BR>c. It is necessary to attach an adequate wind shield (e. g. modified Alter I-type etc.).
