Here we demonstrate that interleukin-3 (IL-3) promotes neurite outgrowth of neurons obtained from septal regions of mouse embryos using serum-free medium. Moreover, IL-3 elevates choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity in these neurons as well as in cholinergic neuronal line cells SN6.10.2.2. Since it is reported that astrocytes produce IL-3-like factors, these results indicate a possible trophic function of IL-3 for central cholinergic neurons in vivo.
