For studying the differentiation of hatching gland cells (HGCs), superficial layer explanted from the presumptive ectoderm of Rana ornativentris embryo at different developmental stages is treated with LiCl and transferred to Barth's solution for 55-80hrs. Hatching gland cells (HGCs) are induced in the explants treated with LiCl at stage 9-11, accompanying the occurrence of mesenchymal tissues and pigment cells. Differential potencies of cells are varied according to the developmental stages of embryos. It may be supposed that the inducing differentiation of HGCs is correlated with the occurrence of mesenchymal tissue and the pigment cells. A possible interpretation concerning the effect of LiCl on the differentiation of HGCs is discussed on the basis of these experimental results.
