The Tokyo Electric Power Co. has been developing new technology for large power overhead transmission lines with TACSR (Thermal resisting aluminium alloy conductor steel reinforced) 410mm2 × 6 bundled conductors, 810 mm2 × 4 bundled conductors (power carrying capacity 6, 500 MW in 50kV) and TACSR 810 mm2 × 6 bundled conductors, 1, 520 mm2 × bundled conductors (Power carrying capacity 10, 000 MW in 500kV).<BR>As one of the series of the studies, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. collaborated with the Fujikura Cable Works, Ltd. in studying to find the best countermeasure against heavy snowfalls for large power overhead transmissions lines.<BR>There have been observations made over 3 winters of the weather, ice adhesion and snow accretion on wire cables at Takaishi-yama, Nozori-ko and Ishiuchi test transmission lines in the snowy and mountainous areas of the Jo-Shinetsu district since the winter of 1970.<BR>Results of the 3 winter field studies are as follows : <BR>1) Results in areas where icing and snow accretion are dependant on altitude were recorded.<BR>2) The type of icing on wire cables was almost all the Rime type with the density about 0.2 g/cm3. The type of snow accretion on wire cables was what we call "Piling and crooking" with the densities less than 0.1 g/cm3.<BR>3) From measurements of icing and snow accretion on wire cable samplers and bundled conductors test lines, the maximum and average values and the standard deviations were obtained.<BR>Estimation curves of icing and snow accretion which showed the weight of icing in proportion to wind velocity × wind duration and the weight of snow accretion in proportion to <I>N</I> (amount of snowfall in cm) were also obtained.<BR>4) 4 bundled conductors are more suitable than 6 bundled conductors for the overhead transmission line in the mountainous and snowy terrain and the areas where galloping can occur.
