With regard to the thalamic afferents, appreciable differences between areas 5 and 7 in the lateral gyrus were noted. Area 7 in the lateral gyrus receives fibers mainly from the posterior lateral and medial pulvinar nuclei, whereas area 5 in the lateral gyrus receives its major input both from the posterior lateral and medial pulvinar nuclei and from the ventral lateral nucleus, as do areas 5 and 7 in the suprasylvian gyrus. In addition, area 5 in the lateral gyrus receives extremely few fibers from the paraf ascicular and centre median nuclei.
