Using Hydroxyethyl Starch (HES) as a filling solution for the extracorporeal circulation for cases divided into 3 groups, the authors obtained the following results. 1. HES caused less hemolysis during the extracorporeal circulation as compared with other filling solutions, the hemolysis per minute being less than 0.45 mg/dl/min. 2. The mode of circulation was stable during the extracorporeal circulation, and a change in the arterial pressure and the central venous pressure was negligible. The peripheral circulation was maintained well. 3. The urinary output during and immediately after the extracorporeal circulation was good and served as an index for the peripheral circulation, showing a correlationship with Ht. Thus, HES was shown to be effective as a filling solution for the extracorporeal circulation. 4. It did not cause disturbance as to electrolytes, hepatic function and blood sugar, nor did it exert any side-effects due to antigenicity. 5. As for the dosage of HES as a filling solution for the diluted extracorporeal circulation, the dilution of 30 per cent is most suitable.
