It has been considered rather difficult to produce labial or lingual carcinoma by painting the oral mucosa with carcinogenic hydrocarbons. However, the author has succeeded in producing labial and lingual carcinoma in a considerable proportion of the animals by painting the labial mucosa with 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4-nitro-quinoline 1-oxide) in propylene glycol. But, this method of producing carcinoma requires considerable time and thus will not meet the needs of the other fields of study. The present experiment was undertaken as a preliminary pilot test to produce lingual carcinoma in a short time.
