Comparison of portal hemodynamics between idiopathic portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis.

Portal hemodynamics in patients with idiopathic portal hypertension were compared with those in patients with liver cirrhosis. Portal vein pressure was about the Same in the two groups. Portal venous flow tended to be increased in patients with idiopathic portal hypertension compared with patients with liver cirrhosis. Splenic venous flow and spleen volume were significantly increased in idiopathic portal hypertension compared with liver cirrhosis, Portal vascular resistance and resistance of portal vascular system except for intrahepatic shunt were significantly increased in patients with liver cirrhosis compared with idiopathic portal hypertension. Portal vascular resistance and resistance of portal vascular system except for intrahepatic shunt were significantly correlated with portal vein pressure in the two groups. These differences may be related indirectly to differing etiologies.
