The incidence and time course of circulating immune complexes (CIC) were studied in sixty two patients with acute viral hepatitis. The CIC detection was made by Raji cell immunofluorescence assay and constitutional immunoglobulin (Ig) class was analized using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) conjugated rabbit anti serum IgA, IgM and IgG.
The CIC was detected in 59 out of 62 patients. A high titer of CIC, mainly of IgA and IgM classes was observed in the acute stage of hepatitis type A. In hepatitis type B, CIC of IgA class was observed in a low incidence, but in hepatitis type NANB of sporadic cases, the incidnece was relatively high.
The presence of CIC of IgA class may provide a possible role of the mucosal immune system of the alimentary tract in the hepatitis type A occured by oral infection and may suggest that a part of NANB hepatitis viruses have the similar mode of infection with hepatitis type A virus.
