The distribution of vitronectin in chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis were studied by the enzyme immunohistochemistry using a specific anti-vitronectin murine monoclonal antibody. In chronic active hepatitis, vitronectin was observed in the connective tissue of the portal and central veins. Vitronectin was found in focal and piecemeal necrosis. In liver cirrhosis, vitronectin was also found in the fibrous septa.
The staining pattern of vitronectin was similar to that of elastic fiber.
In immunoelectron microscipe, vitronectin was found between collagens in fibrotic lesions and found in the internal elastic lamina of hepatic artery.
The serum concentration of vitronectin was measured by the method of enzyme immunoassay. Significant decrease of vitronectin was seen in the patients with chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis.
These results suggested that vitronectin might to be closely related with liver fibrosis.
