To study the effect of ethahol on hepatic albumin synthesis in vitro, male Wistar strain rats were treated either by a single ethanol (5g/kg) feeding or by the feeding with a liquid diet containing 36% of total calories as ethanol during 4 weeks.<BR>Serum level of albumin was not altered by acute or chronic ethanol feeding, but serum cholinesterase activity was decreased by acute ethanol feeding.<BR>14C-leucine labeled proalbumin radio activity in vitro was decreased in acute ethanol group, but increased in chronic ethanol group. Conversion of proalbumin to albumin and secretion of albumin into incubation medium were not impaired in both ethanol groups.<BR>A significant relationship between proalbumin radioactivity and serum cholinesterase activity was found in both ethanol groups.
