This study was performed mainly to clarify the vibratory mode in the muscle layer of the vocal fold, and also to observe how the muscle layer affects the vocal fold vibration itself during phonation. Experimental sound was produced with the use of canine larynges. As contrasting media, lead pellets were inserted into various areas of the vocal fold-under the epithelium, inner layers, and in the deep inner (muscle) layer. To collect various data on this experiment, we used an X-ray stroboscope developed at our laboratory, driven by a trigger from a laryngostroboscope. Experimental sound was produced in each of the following conditions: (1) when all internal laryngeal muscles were activated, (2) when all internal laryngeal muscles except the crico-thyroid were activated, (3) when only the cricothyroid was activated. Pellet movements were taken fluorocinematographically and later analyzed with a film motion analyzer. In all of the above three cases, regular movements were not observed in the pellets inserted into the muscle layers. From these above-mentioned results, it was concluded that the muscle layer might not necessarily play an important role as a vibratory body for producing sound while, on the other hand, the motion of the epithelium membrane of the vocal fold may be more essential in producing sound.
