ZnS (Cu, Mn, Cl) films were prepared by varying the source temperature at the opening and closing of a deposition under a fixed schedule of raising the source temperature. Series of data with electroluminescent (EL), photoluminescent (PL), photo-electroluminescent (PEL) and photovoltaic effect are presented as a function of the source temperature. From these experiments, it was cleared that there is an optimum opening and closing time for efficient EL and PEL emission as the applied voltage on counter electrode Al is negative. From the change of photovoltage and PL spectrum with successive deposition, the type of n or p of a layer constituting the films and the behavior of impurity diffusion during deposition are discussed. It is supposed that the EL emission may be originated in n-p barrier formed in an inner part of the films and that the PEL effect may be caused by the barrier and photoconductive layer near the barrier. Comparison of properties with other films prepared in different other conditions, which emit EL light by the application of positive voltage on counter electrode, is also described.
