Often there is need to augment the capacity of spent fuel storage pool and this is accomplished by closer packing of the fuel rods. The enhanced reactivity is compensated by introducing suitable neutron absorbers into the structural material. Boron is well studied in this respect. This report investigates the possible use of the rare earths (Gd, Sm and Eu) as fixed neutron absorbers, Calculations for a typical LWR spent fuel storage indicates that Gd is the most effective and capacity increases of 32% can easily be realized.
