The effect of void volume variation on pressure buildup in a vibratory compacted UO2 fuel element was studied.<BR>(1) The present paper describes the apparatus and the experimental procedure for measuring void volume in vibratory compacted UO2 fuel element.<BR>(2) It is indicated from a comparison of the ratio of void volume to total inner volume of fuel element and the ratio of total inner volume of fuel element minus calculated volume of UO2 to total inner volume of fuel element that no particle bonding occurred and also that no additional closed pores were generated during vibratory compaction.<BR>(3) Thermal simulation experiments resulted in void volume decrease by microstructural changes such as sintering phenomena and densification.
