Experiments were made to determine the rate-controlling step in the reactions of gaseous BrF3 with UF4 and U3O8 under varying diffusivity of BrF3 brought about by changing the carrier gas.<BR>It was found that, compared with N2 and Ar, He gas used as carrier brings about a reaction rate twice as high. These relative reaction rates are affected by changes in neither linear gas velocity, BrF3 partial pressure, nor reaction temperature; the ratio of the rates between the cases of He, N2 and Ar is roughly equal to the theoretical ratio between the diffusivity of these three gases. The temperature dependence of the reaction rates also corresponds to the theoretical. Hence, the reactions are concluded to be diffusion controlled.
