A sinusoidal neutron source would serve most usefully for studies in the neutron transfer characteristics of a medium. Such a source could be realized by modulating the reactor neutron beam mechanically with a suitably shaped absorber. Such a mechanical technique, however, could not provide a wide frequency range, and the higher frequencies in particular would not be covered. An alternative means would be an accelerator type neutron generator in which a continuous-ly accelerated ion beam is modulated electri-cally in amplitude. This method, however, would have the drawback of not providing a linear relation between the modulating voltage and the amount of the neutrons produced.<BR>In the experiment to be described here, a pseudo-sinusoidal neutron source is realized by operating a convensional pulsed neutron source with pulse frequency modulation (P.F.M). To demonstrate its feasibility, a sample measurement is made of the frequency dependent neutron transfer characteristics of an acrylite medium.
