Isotope separation by gaseous diffusion through a granular type barrier was studied by means of model barriers made with granulated bronze of 40, 60, 120μ grain size and of 3574% measured porosity and 9.724.5μ mean pore radius. The relation between permeability and mean pressure of two vessels was obtained by observing the transient behavior shown during the equalization of a pressure difference provided between the two vessels, when they were connected to each other by a passage through the barrier. The isotope separation efficiency of Ar was measured at various flow rates obtained by changing the fore-pressure in steps of 30, 50 and 100 torr. The experimental results were compared with calculated values obtained with the granular model theory. The observed values of permeability agreed well with calculation, but in respect of the separation efficiency the computed values were somewhat high. The results were also compared with the theoretical values based on the capillary model. The effective pore radii calculated from the permeability data were close to the values obtained by mercury porosimetry.
