Clinical observations were made on patients with severe Bells palsy with reference to their facial expressions and nerve regeneration. The state of nerve regeneration was estimated by means of standard and evoked EMG tests. The results were as follows. 1) Judging from EMG findings, complete regeneration of paralyzed nerve was never achieved in certain cases of over 50 years of age even one year after the onset. 2) Except for those cases mentioned above, complete nerve regeneration was generally ascertained by EMG tests. This would indicate that the route for nerve regeneration is preserved sufficiently even in patients with severe Bells palsy. 3) Except for young children, however, complete recovery of facial expressions was hardly obtained even after electromyographycally-complete nerve regeneration and apparent atrophy of the facial muscles was often observed.
