In order to diagnose the patients suffering from vertigo, otologists generally examine the auditory and vestibular functions and usually find some disturbances in the cochlear and vestibular labyrinth. However, otologists may have to make a step further toward clarifying the etiologic fac- tor, which causes the disturbance of the peripheral labyrinth, in such systems as the central nervous system, circulatory system, autonomic system etc. From this standpoint, I studied 70 cases of Menieres disease electroencephalographically and from the results obtained, I found some etiologic factors which might cause the disturbance of the peripheral labyrinth. In general, consistent abnormalities were not found in EEG before activation, but the activation by megibal induced such abnormalities as spike and wave, rhythmic high voltage wave and other dy- srhythmia in 32 cases, Therefore, dysfunction of diencephalon may be a significant etiologic factor of Menieres disease. Furthermore, the metablic, circulatory and autonomic systems were studied in detail in these 32 cases, however, distinct relation- ship was not found between abnormalties in EEGs and abnormalities in these systems. But, it is of particular interest that most of these 32 cases com- plained of headache, especially hemicrania. This fact will suggest that the etiology of Menieres disease has some thing common with the hemicra- nia. In conclusion, I would like to say that for the diagnosis of Menieres disease not only the auditory and vestibular examinations but examinations for pathologic factors in the central nervous system, circulatory system and autonomic system etc. have to be carried out, since by the treatment of these patholgic factors, the cure of Menieres disease can be often obtained perfectly.
