During tympanoplasty the authors encountered seven cases with abnormal motility of the stapes which spontaneously became dislocated in the cleaning procedure of the pathologic granulation tissue about the stapes. No efflux of perilymph was noted and fenestra ovalis membrane was intact in these cases in which vertigo and vomiting were not experienced. In making a pathohistological study of the stapes of these cases a very specific pathologic observation was made on the correlation between the stapes and fenestra ovalis membrane, that is between the wall of the perilymphatic cavity and margin of the fenestra ovalis. A consideration was therefore attempted on the causes of the decrease of hearing acuity following tympanoplasty.
