To clarify the mechanism of "Heilanaesthesie" (Huneke, 1925), modified procedures were performed on 100 patients with various diseases. The patients were divided into two groups. In the first group, 1.0ml of physiologic saline was injected into both sides of the soft palate submucosa near the tonsils. Those in the second group were injected with 0.5% procaine solution in the same manner. The results of these procedures were 84 patients completely to partially cured, 14 unchanged, and 2 with progression of their disease. There was no difference in effectiveness of the saline and procaine. From this study the following conclusions were made:1. The healing mechanism of "Heilanaesthesie" is unrelated to the action of local anaesthetics, contrary to former reports, and is thought to be nonspecific stimulation to the neurovascular system rather than blocking of nerves.2. Because there is no direct connection in innervation of the injected area and remote lesions. the effect resembles Reilly's phenomenon. If the given stimulus is strong the reaction may be expessed as Reilly's phenomenon, and if weak may produce the healing effects as "Heilanaesthesie"The authors are of the opinion that the diagnostic value of the "Heilanaesthesie" and of tonsillectomy as a cancellation-based diagnosis of focal infection may be doubtful.
