1) The author attempted the audiometry on the examinees from 3 month old infants to adults by using the cochleo-pupillar response during sleep. As soporific, mintal (3-5mg/kg injected in muscles) was used in almost all the cases.2) The cochleo-pupillar responses appear most distinctly when the examinees sleep is very light and also immediately after they fell into sleep.3) On the ears of normal hearing, 82.5% of them response at 40-70db. No age differences are found on the threshold of the response (it is, however, much easier to decide the threshold of infants than of the older examinees).4) In the case of conductive deafness the response is evoked at the average intensity level of 47.0db above threshold, and in the case of perceptive deafness at 22.8db. This marked difference in the threshold values between the both types of deafness implies in the fact that the method can be used to decide whether the hearing difficulty lies in conduction or perception.5) The response is considered to be elicited through the auditory pathway even if the sound stimulus is so intensive that it is accompanied with tactile sensation.6) The response can be used as an objective method of hearing test on the infant baby as well as on the children of mental weakness. It is also useful as a method for detecting and diagnosing the hearing difficulty of central origin.
